Spreckels

The Spreckels Temple of Music was designed by the Reid Brothers in 1899 and later altered in 1960 with a lower performance stage. The structure suffered major damage in the Loma Prieta Earthquake and was closed to the public.

The primary focus of our project was to repair and improve the structure so it may return to public use and withstand the next severe earthquake. This was done by adding shotcrete to the interior brick walls, replacing the existing concrete floors with reinforced concrete.  To strengthen the colonnades, each sandstone column was cored and a one-foot diameter reinforced concrete column was poured within and tied into new grade beams.

Improvements to the structure included demolishing the lower 1960’s stage and replacing it with a more appropriate design constructed of pre-cast concrete that provided ADA access.  A basement and new dressing room were added within the structure.

The project was awarded the Federal Design Achievement Award of the National Endowment to the Arts, the California Preservation Foundation Award, and the Concrete Institute Award for Innovative Design.
